Welfare Working Group at PleaseTalk.ie Castlebar Campus Launch

Members of the GMIT Castlebar Welfare Working Group and the GMIT Castlebar Chaplaincy launched the GMIT Castlebar Campus’ Positive Mental Health Week on Monday, November 22nd along with campuses around the country, along with USI (The Union of Student’s in Ireland)
The week’s aims were to encourage positive mental health by reducing the general stigma attached to the term “Mental Health”, as well as to encourage stress reduction in the run up to Christmas Exams.

The week’s events included:

• Take a friend for Tea/Coffee morning.
• Pyjamas Day
• “Big-Kids” Sports Day
• www.PleaseTalk.ie Campus Launch
• ‘Let Someone Know’ Pack Distribution
• Balloon Memorial Launch

Vice President & Welfare Officer James Mitchell had this to say: “The stereotypes associated with the phrase ‘Mental Health’ can be seen as very negative, when in reality, everybody has some piece of negativity about something within them. The solution I would give to anyone, no matter how bad the situation, is that talking to someone you can trust, always helps. The GMIT Castlebar Student’s Union, and Welfare Working Group will continue to fight the negative stigma associated with Mental Health, not just during this week.”
