Dundalk Institute of Technology

Health Unit

The Institute’s Health Unit is located on the upper floor of the Padraig Faulkner Building as part of the overall Student Services block. It is staffed by one full time nurse, one part time nurse and a local doctor will attend the unit for ten hours per week.

The Student Health Unit is funded from Students’ Capitation Fees.

All full-time students of DKIT have access to the Health Unit free of charge.

Nurse Rust is available to see students at the times posted at the Health Unit.

No appointment is necessary to visit the nurse.

Dr. Shane Gleeson will be available on campus each week during term time at the following times

  • Monday 1.00pm - 3.00pm
  • Tuesday 1.00pm - 3.00pm
  • Wednesday 1.00pm - 3.00pm
  • Thursday 12.30pm - 2.30pm
  • Friday 1.00pm - 3.00pm

Students who wish to see the doctor should make an appointment with the Nurse before the commencement of the doctor’s surgery session. Students should only visit the doctor during the campus surgery times as detailed above. Students may be referred to a doctor’s private surgery in emergencies only, and with the prior approval of the Nurse.

Students are advised to notify Nurse Rust if they suffer from conditions requiring special attention, e.g. Epilepsy, Diabetes, etc. In doing so, they can ensure that help will always be available if required.

Students attending the health Unit for repeat prescriptions should give one week’s notice to the nurse.

Accidents at DKIT

If you have an accident in DKIT, please notify a member of staff immediately or contact Nurse Rust. Then inform your Head of Department. All Departments and the Students’ Union have First Aid kits. Where necessary, students can be referred to the Casualty Unit at the Louth County Hospital, Dublin Road, Dundalk, by the Institute doctor or nurse. You will not have to pay a casualty charge in these cases.

Medical Cards

Medical Card application forms may be obtained from the Student Health Unit. Entitlement to a Medical Card is on the basis of the financial circumstances of your family if you are under 25 years of age.
Please note the following points in relations to Medical Cards

  • If your parents have Medical Cards you will be entitled to a card of your own.
  • Mature students over 25 years of age may apply for Medical Cards.

The Health Service Executive advises that students with current Medical Cards should register with the Institute’s doctor for the duration of their studies in Dundalk I.T. This will in no way interfere with your Medical Card entitlements. Your new Medical Card can be used at home with any GP on all non-Institute days i.e. weekends and holiday times.
Please call into the Student Health Unit for further information or details regarding medical entitlements.
